Planning for the next phase of the project

As the current tranche of events and activities comes to a close at the end of July, the team is now planning for the next phase of the project. The research phase is nearly at an end, with the visit to look at the replica Arkwright machine last Saturday was a great success (blog post to soon follow). We have found many links between the economy of the National Park and the ideas that shaped it and India. Our next phase will focus on developing a local environmental consciousness within the Hindu and Indian community in Sheffield and strengthening it through identifying means to sustain it in the years to come. We would like to move from small steps that the Hindu community has taken such as environmental friendly energy supply at the temple, developing the green space in the premises, switching off lights, cooking in a environmental friendly way, to valuing the benefits of the National Park and cherish and nurture the special landscape and lend a helping hand in larger environmental measures. Finding the heritage links between the Park and India has made it that much more special to the community, making it worth protecting and cherishing.

Talks are on with the RCH group at Sheffield University to partner in their heritage seminar series. We had a great meeting last week to discuss an event we would like to host on multiculturalism and the environment, drawing from the project findings and inviting some high-profile speakers to the event.

Plans are on to host an event at the National Park, meeting with the rangers, to share our findings and to plan walk routes around our the Park, suitable to our project themes. The event is scheduled to take place on the 2nd of August, 2013 at the Moorland Discovery Centre at Longshaw Estate in the National Park. In the meanwhile the team is discussing with the Calver Weir Restoration Team to develop some material around guided walks around Calver Mill.
